St Marys School for the Blind
Sister Agnes is the Headmistress at St Mary's School for the Visually Impaired based in Kawambwa. The school was founded in 1961 along with Mporokoso Blind School by the Sisters of the African Child Jesus, an African Local Congregation. The age range is 6 to 18 years and each school has about 85 children although they have a capacity for 100. They enrol the totally blind, partially sighted and the albinos (50%). At the moment they have a lot of albinos who because of their low vision cannot be in normal schools.
Sometimes the blindness is due to inadequate medication as a result simple eye sores may eventually develop into cataracts which may cause partial or total blindness.
We visited in June 2011 on the last day of their term and saw a wonderful presentation from the children which displayed their amazing confidence and courage. The fees to attend for a term (6 months) is £25 which includes transporting the children to and from the school. Inter Care supplies 100% of their medical needs and this is dispensed by Alice who looks after the sick children. The children travel from up to 170 kms away to attend the school and there are 4 children from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sr Agnes does amazing work with her staff (4 of which are blind) at the school in difficult conditions This school is supported by Ulverscroft Foundation and Charlotte Green.
