Mumbezhi Rural Health Centre is 120km from the nearest town, Solwezi in North West Zambia. The health centre was started by Sisters of Charity (International Congregation) in 1993 because there were no health facilities in the area. The water comes from a local well and their electricity from solar power. They communicate via the radio. The health centre has male, female, children and maternity wards with 48 beds but with no resident Doctor. There is a Doctor who visits quarterly therefore the centre is staffed by 9 staff which includes 4 nurses and 4 midwives. An AIDS home visiting programme was started in 2000 however local people shun AIDS vicitms. The most common causes of death are Malaria, Malnutrition, Measles and Diarrhoea.
