Muliansolo Rural Health Centre is situated to the north of Isoka near to the Tanzania border 74 k from the nearest major town of Chinsali and it is 4 hours drive to the nearest referral hospital in the dry season and inaccessible in the rainy season.

There are no protected water sources and all water comes from bore holes and there is only solar powered electricity which is grossly inadequate for the needs of the clinic and the neighbouring convent and school. The taste is not good and the water makes the utensils brown and rusty. There are no telephone lines and electricity but they communicate using radio network.

The health Centre has 50 beds in three wards and 10 cot beds. Sister Catherine Chisanga and her small staff are very committed and do the best that they can with their limited resources to look after the 23,000 in their catchment area. The centre has 28 villages with the furthest village 68km away. The total number of households served is 5,748. They have an outreach service which visits 9 villages once a month to do this the staff walk for about 20k to the nearest of these outreach posts. They have 50-60 deliveries per month which is incredibly high considering there are only 3 members of staff (none of them officially midwives) and a lab technician. Their workload is supplemented by local workers. They currently have no ambulance so rely on Chinsali Hospital 70kms away on extremely poor roads for their medical emergencies.

Inter Care visited in June 2011 and saw how poorly stocked and understaffed the health centre is. We supply 40% of their medical requirements. It was evident from our visit how much they need our help.
