Luwi Hospital, Ntambu
Luwi Mission Hospital serves a population of around 25,000. Ntambu is deep in the African bush. There is no electricity, no telephone and no mail connection. The small dirt road into Ntambu is often impossible to travel in the rainy season.The next town is Solwezi which is about 220km a distance of 5 hours by 4 wheel drive or 10 days on foot.In 2009, the hospital had 5,363 outpatients and 3,905 inpatients and the most conditions treated were malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. The 141 beds capacity hospital has only one doctor yet manages to operate most departments except the operating theatre, X-Ray, Dental and Physiotherapy Department. Zambia's HIV/AIDS prevalence amongst adults is among the highest in the world at 16.5% in 2003 (WHO, 2006). In 2009 the Hospital carried out 1,800 HIV tests on males of which 54 were positive and of the 3,600 female HIV tests, there were 108 positive results.
In 2009, 1,004 patients received Inter Care medicines free of charge.
