St Josephs Dispensary, Uchira

Tanzania St Josephs Dispensary, Uchira

Uchira is a small bustling market town on the road between Moshi and the Kenyan border. This dispensary is set away from the road and serves the local population with basic care and maternity and ante-natal services. It appears sleepy but on investigation is found to provide what is needed – and at any hour of the day. The clinic sees between 5 and 15 out patients a day. The cathcment area is a population of 9,000 people.

It has 10 beds and a small but scantly equipped laboratory. Inter Care supplied the much needed microscope to enable simple tests (such as the detection of malaria parasites) to be carried out on site.

Inter Care visited in September 2009 and found the clinic to be very poor indeed. Clearly any help from Inter Care is both appreciated and badly needed. They have almost nothing in the way of delivery instruments yet have on average 12 deliveries per month.
