Tanzania St. Gemma's Health Centre, Lumuma

Lumuna Health Centre is part of the complex that includes the Noviciate of the Sisters of St Gemma Galgani and is situated in the Dodoma area of Tanzania 150 km from the nearest referral hospital. It is reached by very rough and unreliable roads. Dodoma is the state capital of the country and translated from Swahili means “it has sunk”.

The centre at Lumuma was first supported by InterCare in 2000 following a visit to the region by some of our Trustees. Sr Rosalia Mwasu and her staff of 5 look after the 30 bedded centre which deals with a wide spectrum of health problems. They have maternity clinic, TB Programme and run out-reach programmes to 6 of the outlying villages. 4 times a year they are visited by a doctor.

The centre has a small laboratory, which is always in need of further equipment. It is very remote and the roads to it are very difficult of access, but the site is extremely beautiful, hilly and fertile, and there is a water-powered electricity generator. The Health Centre provides the only medical care over a wide area and as well as the usual maternity services can offer minor surgery.
