Rangwi Dispensary

Tanzania Rangwi Dispensary

Inter Care has been supporting Rangwi Dispensary since 1999. Rangwi Dispensary is situated in the Tanga diocese of Tanzania about 50 km from the nearest town, and referral hospital at Lushoto. It is in the region of the Kenyan border and the coast of the Indian Ocean. The Dispensary is run by the Congreagtion of Our Lady of Usambara.

There are 4 qualified nurses, a clinical officer and one doctor who care for a population of 7,100 people. Electricity at Rangwi is produced by a generator and kerosene lamps are used for lighting. Roads in the area are very poor and become very difficult in the rainy season. Supplies of water are very variable in quality and many have to walk for long distances to find clean water.

The site, up in the mountains to the west of Tanga, is so beautiful it has been called the Garden of Eden. As well as a convent and school there is a unit to provide basic health care and maternity services etc. that would not otherwise be available in the isolated area.
