A simple medical unit has been run on the outskirts of the town of Mgolole (some 100 miles west of Dar-es-Salaam) since 1954 by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary but it has now been upgraded to full Health Centre status. It is a substantial unit with 4 wards and a small laboratory. Out-patient attendance is increasing because of the good facilities. On the same site, the Sisters run an orphanage and refuge for the elderly and disadvantaged, all of whom are served from this Health Centre. A mobile clinic offers out-reach services and there are regular ante-natal and Child Health clinics.
