Matai Dispensary
A small but much valued centre in a remote part of western Tanzania, started in 1969, staffed by Sisters from the Congregation of O/L Queen of Africa at Sumbawanga, the only large town in the area and 59km away. Accommodation was very limited at the time of our previous visit because the demand on the services was very great as patients have no means of travelling to Sumbawanga. The staff of 4 work long hours and show great initiative in solving problems as they serve a catchment area of almost 17,000 people.
They currently have 10 beds although this will increase once they become a health centre. There is no electricity or solar power and water is collected from a borehole.
Our Inter Care volunteer saw the baby scales that we had recently sent them in use, on her visit in September 2010.
