Kibosho Hospital is situated in the Moshi region of Tanzania. It is a District Designated Hospital (DDH) based in the village of Singa, Kibosho East Division and lies 1400 meters (5800ft) above sea level on the beautiful slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Kibosho Hospital started as a dispensary in 1929 - a building with seven rooms. It was between 1958 and 1965 that wards were added to upgrade it to a hospital. The hospital is geared towards the curative aspect of acute medical and surgical conditions against the background of holistic care. The most common disease in this area of Tanzania is malaria and its associated conditions such as anaemia.

The hospital also provides an outreach programme at 18 sites which are visited once a month. Sister Dr Henrika has been in charge of the hospital for many years and Inter Care was pleased to host a visit by her during its 30th anniversary celebrations in 2004. The government supports the hospital as if it still has the same number of beds it had when it opened, and it has enlarged dramatically since then. As the government also requires medicines to be provided free of charge to under 5's, ante-natal patients, the elderly and poor, the hospital is constantly in debt.

Much help has been given over the years with building and other support from a Diocese in Germany but Inter Care’s help is very much needed to enable the very poorest to receive medicines at little or no cost. Patients come long distances to be treated here because of its high reputation. Inter Care is proud to have obtained funding for the building of a refrigerated mortuary at the hospital: a sad but necessary facility.

We visited in September 2009 and noted that this 225 bedded general hospital is growing at a rapid pace due to donors from Europe. There is a new HIV clinic (550 patients registered) with continuing care. The need for ongoing supplies from Inter Care are still urgently needed especially since the advent of new departments.
