Huruma hospital is situated in the Moshi region of Tanzania, at the base of Kilimanjaro and was opened in 1968. It has a large catchment area and the majority of its patients are subsistence farmers. Although the government pays a proportion of its salary bill, the Diocese of Moshi and patient fees need to cover running costs and the provision of medicines. Inter Care has been supporting Huruma Hospital since 1994 and in that time a nursing school, attached to the hospital, has been built, hence the relatively large number of nurses at the hospital. Dr Safari and her team regularly have to deal with cases of malaria, pneumonia and AIDS related illnesses (TB, chest infections, anaemia, fungal infections). People arriving at the hospital may have been referred from surrounding health centres and it serves a wide area in the extreme north-east of Tanzania, some patients also crossing from neighbouring Kenya. Often their journey is a long and uncomfortable one. Many of these patients are unable to pay for their treatment and Inter Care medicines which are given to them free of charge ensure that they receive the appropriate medical care whatever their financial status. Dr Safari has been at the hospital for at least 10 years and has a very willing and able team around her. The main thing that they are lacking is the finance to buy medicines.After a visit from Inter Care in September 2009, it was clearly recognised that we need to continue sending supplies. The local incidence of HIV is down to 3.5% but our Patients With Aids (PWA) parcels are deeply appreciated.
