Checkereni Dispensary

Tanzania Checkereni Dispensary

Checkereni is situated in the Moshi region of Northern Tanzania and is about 16 kilometres from Moshi Town. Despite this proximity, it is very isolated due to the poor condition of the roads, which are often impassable. The dispensary has a catchment of around 4,000 people, many of whom are migrant Masai. The dispensary is under the supervision of Kibosho hospital (which also receives support from Inter Care) under Sister Dr Henrika, but she is not able to visit on a regular basis. Checkereni’s resident nurse is highly experienced and, along with her nursing assistants, has complete autonomy over the treatment and management of the dispensary’s patients with support from Sr. Henrika when it is needed. Money from the Memorial Fund for Dr Patricia Rosenberg—the co-founder of InterCare who died in 1993, enabled the buildings of the centre to be completed and 10 members of Inter Care, including its Patron, Bp. Frank Walmsley, attended its opening. Checkereni is in the process of building a staff house as the staff currently has to sleep in the dispensary. This work is ongoing as and when additional funds allow for building work to progress. The unit is small but has a pharmacy, a very simple laboratory, a few beds and provides ante-natal and maternity care as well as the normal out-patient services, including vaccinations.

Sister Pat (Inter Care Trustee) visited this Dispensary in September 2009 ans said "this is one of the poorest clinics I have ever visited." Mrs Elizabeth Mtvi a senior nursing officer has seen 3,028 patients since January this year and has had no leave since 1995. She serves a cartchment area of 5 villages.
