Baraki Dispensary
This unit is 56 km from Musoma near the eastern shore of Lake Victoria in the north of Tanzania. It is run by the Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa. The area is extremely dry and though the unit has mains electricity, there is no running water. A major problem is that people are forced to use dirty water from the lake with consequent intestinal diseases. Around 1,000 people are treated as in-patients each year but a much larger number attend as outpatients, especially for vaccination and ante-natal care. There are nutrition and health-education programmes as well as community home-based care for those affected by HIV/AIDS. The picture below is "an anaemic baby receiving an arm-to-arm blood transfusion from a relative as there is no blood bank".
