Malawi Pirimiti Health Centre

Situated towards the south of Malawi, this was one of the first health centres staffed by African Catholic Sisters and it is now in the hands of the Servants of Mary. It is somewhat isolated, the better to serve the scattered population, but provides excellent services with some remarkable success stories to its credit, including coping with a massive cholera outbreak. Though at the time they had only 30 beds, they nursed 130 cholera patients and lost only 10.

There are 46,000 people living in 78 villages in its catchment area. They walk or bicycle to the hospital some as far as 10km. There are now 58 beds in 5 wards which cover male, female, children, maternity and a nutrition unit and OPD. It also runs outreach child immunisation clinics. The hospital has around 150 maternity cases each month, 10-15 of these being premature births.

The soil of the area is poor and dry, so malnutrition is a common problem and the Health Centre has a nutritional rehabilitation unit as well as offering VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) for HIV / AIDS, ante-natal clinics and outreach vaccination clinics.

After a visit in September 2009, we observed that the state of the existing wards is very poor and some mothers are opting to have their babies at home rather than use the facilty - which after seeing women deliver on floors as there are not enough beds is understandable. However, they are working very hard to ensure that the hospital improves and now have 14 nurse/midwives and are building a new centre which will have 100 beds with the added facility that they hope to be able to treat most cases on site and not need to refer as many to Zomba Hospital (one hour away).
