Nkhamenya Mission Hospital

This community hospital with some 90 beds is a Mission Hospital under control of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary and several of the Sisters work there. The hospital is situated 65 km north of Kasungu in the centre of Malawi on a good main road and serves a catchment area in the region of 40,000. Some of their patients come from as far as Zambia.

It is part of a large complex that also includes primary and secondary schools, a nutrition unit and facilities for Voluntary Counselling and Testing for HIV/AIDS. The work of the staff also includes HIV/AIDS education programmes and visits to outreach clinics and a new operating block is being completed. Deliveries average 60 per month and the ante-natal clinics are well-attended. A dentist visits every three months and extractions are done by dental assistant in the interim.

The hospital rears goats and chickens and grows maize and cassava in its grounds. A new mill for grinding corn helps supply the local community with flour.

After a visit in September 2009 we discovered that they had built new theatres but were waiting to recruit staff to enable them to get up and running. They were also building a new out-patient block which was still under construction. Even though several new buildings were being erected, it was very evident that they needed the support of donated medicines from Inter Care.

A visit took place in September 2012 and the population area had grown to 60,000, many of whom came over the border from Zambia. They were desperate for basic small instruments, gloves and aprons.
