Matiya Health Centre
This is a small unit, started in 1970, in a rural location in the Zomba region, more than 100 km from Blantyre. It has been heavily dependent on the supplies sent from Inter Care. A long letter from the Sister in Charge acknowledging receipt of Inter Care parcels included the following statistics: an average of 90 deliveries per month, and annually, 1,500 outpatients seen, 200 admitted for close observation, 250 pregnant women seen at the ante-natal clinic with 800 children in the Under Fives clinic and 70 maternity cases transferred to Zomba Central Hospital. Their one ambulance is frequently off-road because of needing repairs after travelling on the very poor roads. After a visit in September 2009, we established that the centre has 33 beds and the catchment area is 32,723 which consists of 96 villages. They are still very reliant on the medicines they receive from Inter Care.
