Womens Central Prison Infirmary
The women’s prison is adjacent to the men’s Central Prison in Kumasi and has capacity for 60 prisoners. There is a nurse to staff their infirmary and Inter Care sends appropriate items for it, bearing in mind that prisoners who are pregnant and give birth in prison keep the babies with them until they are weaned.
In February 2009, Inter Care visited this prison and found there to be 200 prisoners with only one trained nurse and 3 aides. No photographs were taken due to the intrusive nature of photographs and the distressing living conditions.
We visite in September 2010 and at the moment there were only 38 prisoners of which 2 were pregnant. They will give birth to the children in prison and be allowed to keep the child with them until they are weaned and then they will go to either the family or a children's home until the mother is released from prison.
