St Peters Hospital, Jacobu

Little girl at St Peters Hospital, Jacobu

St Peter's Health Centre is in a very poor rural area and consists of several unconnected buildings on the top of the hill overlooking Jacobu. This small rural hospital in the Diocese of Obnasi has 8 female beds, 8 male beds, 15 children's beds and 20 maternity beds (40-50 deliveries per week) and has two resident doctors. There are no other medical facilities in the area. The four wards are for paediatric, maternity, surgical and medical cased and there are daily out-patient clinics. The major conditions treated are malaria, anaemia, pneumonia, diarrhoea and the complications of pregnancies. In addition to ante-natal and child health clinics, there are mobile clinics visiting 25 villages and a community home-based care programme.

After a visit by Inter Care in February 2009 it was discovered that they are in the process of building a new block which will include an outpatients department, a laboratory, consulting rooms, registration and a waiting area and more beds. Thie additional building has been funded by the government but they will not fund the new wards which are badly needed (giving a total of 80 beds) or fund the accommodation block for the staff. They perform some quite major surgery and need more instruments. They are very grateful for the medical items sent by Inter Care and that we do not send enough. Unfortunately we are restricted by the amounts we receive from donors.
