St Michaels Hospital, Pramso
St Michael’s Hospital is located in the small town of Pramso, around 25 minutes drive from the regional capital, Kumasi. A medium-sized hospital, St. Michael’s hospital has been providing medical care since 1958 to a catchment area of approximately 135,000. The unit has 99 beds which include medical, surgical, paediatric, matermity and opthalmic and 5 residential doctors as well as visiting specialists in paediatric surgery, obstetrics and ophthalmology. The out-patient department deals with nearly 60,000 appointments a year and there are HIV/AIDS treatment and education programmes, community home-based care programmes and outreach clinics. As in most of Africa, malaria is the disease most commonly treated at St Michael’s; in addition there are annual cholera outbreaks in June/July. Mobile clinics visit 5 outlying villages once a month offering maternal health and general medical consultations. They are an accredited hospital for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Following on from a recent visit by Inter Care in February 2009, we discovered they are in the process of building a new opthalmic centre and have a visiting team of opthalmologists from Canada for 2 weeks each year who carry out about 150 cataract operations. They are still very much in nedd of Inter Care's help and need all types of instruments and lab equipment.
10/03/09 "Our hospital, St Michaels Hospital attends to an average of 450 patients per day being the only one in the district. Because of good healthcare delivery, clients (patients) from the nearby city, Kumasi come all the way for healthcare even though it is located in the district. There is an obvious pressure in equipment and any donation is welcomed.
In fact donations in any form, medicines, equipment are very welcome and would be appreciated because they are badly needed."
