St Edwards Clinic, Dwinyama

St Edward’s Clinic has been supported by Inter Care for many years. A rural clinic, 45 minute drive from the regional capital of Kumasi, St. Edwards Clinic is efficiently run by Sr. Mary Laetitia, an RGN one of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters. It serves 18 villages with a population of about 18,000. Their 11 beds are reserved mainly for maternity cases. Referrals either have to be sent to the Government District Hospital 25km away or 43km away to the Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Sr. Laeitia has implemented a two-year plan to upgrade to a health centre (by building more wards and opening a lab) and works in close collaboration with the doctor at the nearby St John of God Hospital. Former Inter Care employee, Emma Carney, can vouch for the level of care given at St Edwards, as she was treated for Malaria there during a monitoring visit in 2004; "Although I was insistent that I was fine, Sr. Laetitia took one look at me and diagnosed Malaria, a diagnosis later backed up by lab tests. She could not do enough for me in providing treatment, as well as sandwiches and tea to help the absorption of the medicines. There is no doubt that, had Sr. Laetitia not picked up on my malaria so quickly, it would have been much more serious, potentially life-threatening. This experience provided a real eye-opener to being on the receiving end of the life-saving assistance that we provide to St Edward’s and the high level of care and treatment that can be provided in such sparse conditions."

Inter Care visited St Edwards in February 2009 and noted that it has developed extensively since the last visit in 2004. They are now in the process of looking for equipment for the new wards and the new theatre.
