St Annes Maternity Clinic, Donyina

St. Anne’s Clinic is the only health centre serving the small village of Donyina and the surrounding population of about 4,000 in the Ashanti region of Ghana. It is a small clinic with 8 beds for maternity cases only, but daily outpatient clinics for general medical cases. While it is relatively close (around 30km) to the regional capital, Kumasi, the roads are in a poor and deteriorating state and with no vehicle the clinic is fairly isolated in terms of referral opportunities and obtaining supplies. However, with its clinical officer and two nurses n and a total staff of 14, St Anne’s is more than able to manage the patients from the small catchment area effectively. St. Anne’s also has close links with Madonna Clinic (another Inter Care supported clinic) and staff from both support each other to cover absence, sickness etc.

Following on from a visit by Inter Care in February 2009 it was discovered that they have received a grant from a lady in Germany to start to rebuild the clinic which is in a poor state. They have commenced the building but they need more money for equipment, basic furniture and more staff. At the moment there are only 8 beds but when the new wing is finished there will be 30 beds. They now have a permanent doctor at this clinic which is new.

Inter Care visited in September 2010 and they are now in the new building and have a theatre block. They also have a new delivery room which was equipped with funding from the Dominica congregation and the local community have raised funds to refurbish the OPD.
