Manhyia Prison
Submitted by editor on 22. October 2008 - 15:59
This prison on the outskirts of Kumasi has a capacity for 200 prisoners and its infirmary is staffed by a “first-aider” who holds 450-500 consultations a year. The main complaints are headaches, abdominal pains, skin rashes and malaria. Inter Care has been supplying basic medications, which the prison officials say constitute 70% of all the treatments given.
At a visit in Febraury 2009 there were 160 prisoners who are all serving terms of less than 6 years. They are still in desperate need of the medicines from Inter Care. No photographs were taken due to the intrusive nature and the distressing living conditions.
