St Monica's Health Centre

Cameroon

St Monica's Health Centre has been supported by Inter Care since November 2009. The health centre originally started out as a dispensary and now sees 200 patients per month plus 200 for child welfare and 80 at antenatal clinic. The population of the catchment area is 30,077. The staff of 1 permanent doctor, 6 nurses, a midwife and 2 laboratory technicians look after 36 beds. They have in the region of 30 deliveries per month.

The unit is located in Ndop in North West Cameroon. The condition of the roads is poor and the availability of water is via an individual well which is poorly treated.

They buy their medicines locally but have priority for medicines for malaria, anaemia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections and gastric infections. They desperately need dressings (especially for burns) and small surgical equipment.

After a visit in February 2010, it was established that it is a gloomy, large place that is desperately under equipped and Inter Care should help as much as possible to support.
