St Therese Health Centre, Douala

Cameroon Patients waiting at the busy clinic

This is very busy Clinic situated on the outskirts of Douala and about 30mins drive to the nearest referral hospital. The approaching road is rough; the car used is the convent car as the centre has not yet got an ambulance or suitable vehicle, which is badly needed. It is owned and run by the Sisters of St Therese. It is the only one of their many clinics that is owned by the Convent. Inter Care visited this clinic for the first time in 2007.

KIA UKInter Care were fortunate to get much needed Sponsorship from Kia Motors, Bolton which enables us to send requested medicines and equipment for 2 years. A very successful return visit in October 2008 with the Manager of Kia and his wife with Sister Pat enabled the donors to see first hand the medicines that had been sent. It was great to see the way the clinic has developed in the past year.

After a visit in February 2010 we found that there are now 11 nurses (3 are midwives) and 1 anaesthethetic nurse. The Centre is run by 3 sisters and 2 doctors. No of Beds: 80. There are more than 1000 patients a month and the average number of births is 20. Being in a typical village set up this fluctuates a great deal. The catchment area now stands at 7,500 people.Sandra with Sr Stella at her Clinic Donated drugs
