Mount Mary Maternity, Buea
Situated in the South-west Province in the foothills of Mount Cameroon – the highest peak in West Africa – this small hospital, which has the facility for quite major surgery, has been fulfilling an important role for patients from nearby Buea town since it was founded by Buea Catholic diocese in 1967. The total catchment area is about 50,000 (though there are other hospitals within that area) and there are 57 beds divided between 7 wards. There are two resident doctors and surgery is offered in the two theatres. The usual maternity, ante-natal, vaccination and HIV/AIDS clinics are offered.
After a visit in October 2008 it was discovered that Mount Mary is still a very large health centre. It could be a hospital but this requires extra taxation hence their hesitation in seeking this status at present. It is very run down.
