Ekite Health Centre

Cameroon Ekite Health Centre

This Dispensary was started by the Franciscan Sisters in 1995 to meet the needs of factory workers living on the outskirts of French-speaking Edea, 63 km to the south-east of Douala. The Sisters said the workers needed the clinic because they were ‘financially rich but health poor’ (although the wages in fact were very low). Initially there were no resources to start a clinic and consultations were held and drips administered in a semi-ruined school house. New premises were finally built in 2005 and there is now a resident doctor and a visiting opthalmologist who look after a population of 12,067. There are 40 beds staffed by 1 permanent doctor, 7 nurses, 1 midwife, a lab technician and assistant. Some 3,000 out-patient consultations are held annually along with a comprehensive range of laboratory testing, ultrasound scans and there is a small theatre. In addition, an eye-clinic is available and there are the usual ante-natal and child health clinics. HIV/AIDS is, naturally, prevalent usually having been diagnosed in the government hospitals.

After a visit to Cameroon in February 2010, the Sister in Charge Sr Josephine requested additional supplies of general surgical instruments and commented that they would welcome larger consignments from Inter Care.
