Cisterian Abbey, Bamenda

Cameroon

The Abbey is a daughter house, founded in 1964, of Mount St. Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire and Inter Care undertakes to supply basic medicines to the Abbey infirmary in Cameroon. Initially this was just the medicines required by the monks themselves, but starting from the most basic facilities, the infirmary has become a life-line for people in surrounding villages (population 20,000) as well, and one of the monks with medical training is now able to open a clinic several days a week. Only out-patient services are offered.

After a visit in February 2010, we established that there are 27 Cistercian Monks in the community offering very basic dispensary and help to the local community which appears to be very poor. They would like increased support in the amount of medicines and creams etc. that they get from Inter Care.
