The initials stand for “Associated Rehabilitation Centre for the Handicapped”, the name of a remarkable unit to be found at Tiko on the southern cost of Cameroon, 50 km from Douala. Started in 1987 and run heroically for many years on a shoe-string by an English nurse-physiotherapist, Selena Firth, it now has resident full-time experienced nurses. The Centre not only helps those unable to get help anywhere else but also makes all its own equipment in a workshop on site where young men are trained and taught skills with which to earn a living.
After a vist in October 2008, it was discovered that their main needs are dressings, rehab equipment, splints and pain killers.
